OSHA First Aid

OSHA defines First Aid as medical attention that is usually administered immediately after an injury occurs and at the location where it occurred.

It often consists of a one-time, short-term treatment and requires little technology or training to administer. First aid can include cleaning minor cuts, scrapes, or scratches; treating a minor burn; applying bandages and dressings; the use of non-prescription medicine; draining blisters; removing debris from the eyes; massage; and drinking fluids to relieve heat stress.

First Aid should be administered by the on-scene coordinator as needed using standard first aid methods. Under no circumstances should anyone administer first aid for which they are untrained or unqualified to do. DO NOT move the injured person unless it is absolutely necessary to prevent further injury.

First Aid Policy in the Workplace

Employers are responsible for the type, amount, maintenance of first aid supplies, and first aid procedures in the workplace. Safety by Design has the necessary training and knowledge to compile and verify the work area has the required first aid supplies distinctive to the job site. Our trained professionals have the know-how to document and implement first aid response plan in the workplace.

First Aid Training

Our American Heart Association First Aid Training Programs elements include:

Safety by Design has Houston safety training programs specific to types of injury: shock, bleeding, poisoning, burns, extreme temperatures, musculoskeletal injuries, bites and stings, medical emergencies, and confined spaces.

Safety by Design First Aid Program

First Aid Training Regulations and Occupational Health and Safety first aid regulations require instruction in the principles and first aid intervention of injuries covering the following sites:

Our first aid training program incorporates an emphasis on quick response to first aid situations along with โ€˜hands-onโ€™ skills throughout our entire program.

After completing the Safety by Design courses and successfully passing the written and practical tests, trainees receive two certificates: adult CPR and first aid. Itโ€™s just one certificate

How Often Is First Aid Training Required?

Basic adult CPR retesting should occur every year and first aid skills and knowledge should be reviewed every three years. OSHA recommends that CPR training include trainees developing ‘hands-on’ skills using mannequins and partner practice. The requirement is actually every 2 years for both through Red Cross and AHA.

The training program for your company should be periodically reviewed and updated with current first aid techniques and knowledge. Our Texas safety consultants keep current on all first aid techniques and first aid products available.

Our first aid services include reminders, regular schedules, and custom schedules in which to review the workplace first aid policies and procedures.

Post-Incident Response Services

OSHA’s revised recordkeeping rule (which went into effect January 1, 2002) does not require first aid injury cases to be documented. While it is not an OSHA requirement, the best practice is to document every cleaning of minor cuts, scrapes, or scratches; treating a minor burn; applying bandages and dressings; the use of non-prescription medicine; draining blisters; removing debris from the eyes; massage; and drinking fluids to relieve heat stress.

First Aid Documentation

No injury is too small. First Aid Documentation is an excellent way to have everyone in the organization maintain a safety-first attitude.

First Aid documentation can be achieved in several ways. It can be as simple as a log sheet stating the date, time, name, and type of injury and the treatment. It can be more formal like a First Aid Report Form that requires the employee and supervisor signatures.

It is also a good way to collect data from everyday activities.ย  Analyzing the First Aid Log Sheet may reveal a correlation between a work procedure and small injuries. By reviewing and possibly changing a work procedure, fewer injuries may occur and maybe even prevent more severe injuries.
